Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid Weekend Weather: Thunderstorms and Cooler Autumn Air

Newcastle Ladysmith Vryheid weekend weather

As the calendar advances into mid-March across northern KwaZulu-Natal, the final warmth of summer is steadily yielding to the cooler, more variable air of early autumn.

Consequently, communities in Newcastle, Ladysmith, and Vryheid face a weekend characterised by predominantly cloudy skies, noticeably milder daytime temperatures, and a recurring chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Furthermore, AccuWeather’s projections reinforce this unsettled outlook. Overcast conditions are expected to dominate in all three towns, while intervals of rain or thunder appear likely at different points across the days.

Meanwhile, the accompanying drop in evening temperatures should provide pleasant relief from the recent warmer spell, naturally encouraging residents to spend more time indoors and savour quieter evenings.

We now take a closer look a AccuWeather’s detailed forecast for the weekend:

Friday, 13 March 2026

Newcastle: Overcast skies will persist from morning to night, with temperatures rising to 29°C and thunderstorms developing in the afternoon. Thereafter, overnight lows are predicted to reach around 12°C, and additional thunderstorms cannot be ruled out.

Ladysmith: Cloudy conditions will hold firm throughout the day, allowing highs of 29°C. By nightfall, temperatures are expected to settle at 14°C.

Vryheid: Persistent cloud cover is forecast, with daytime peaks of 27°C. Overnight, the tempeture should dip to 14°C, accompanied by the possibility of thunder.

Saturday, 14 March 2026

Newcastle: Overcast weather is set to continue, with highs reaching 29°C and thunderstorms anticipated in the afternoon. In turn, evening temperatures will ease to 14°C, and rain is likely through the night.

Ladysmith: Cloudy skies will remain in place and temperatures will climb to a warmer 30°C. Later, overnight lows of 15°C are expected, with the chance of another thunderstorm.

Vryheid: Cloudy conditions will continue, with temperatures topping out at 27°C and spells of rain and thunderstorms developing. As evening arrives, lows will fall to 16°C, and thunderstorms could linger.

Sunday, 15 March 2026

Newcastle: Cooler conditions will take hold beneath unbroken cloud, restricting highs to 23°C. During the afternoon, rainfall and thunderstorms are expected, followed by evening lows of 14°C and a possibility of showers or isolated thunder overnight.

Ladysmith: Overcast skies are likely to endure, with temperatures peaking at 26°C and rain together with thunderstorms probable in the afternoon. Overnight, lows of 15°C are forecast, once again with a risk of thunderstorms.

Vryheid: A distinctly cool day awaits under cloudy conditions, with highs limited to 23°C and rain showers plus a thunderstorm on the cards. Overnight, further thunderstorms may occur as temperatures descend to 15°C.

So here’s the silver lining for everyone in Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid: the weekend is handing you the perfect excuse to slow down.

Pull on a light jacket for those fresh afternoon breezes, keep a raincoat handy for the inevitable shower, and let the sound of rain on the roof become background music to a movie night, a long catch-up with family, or simply the rare luxury of doing very little.
