Weekend Heat and Thunderstorms Forecast for Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid

Newcastle thunderstorm warning

According to AccuWeather’s forecast for the next three days, all three towns are expected to experience continued blistering conditions, while intermittent thunderstorms are forecast to develop over the weekend.

At the same time, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a further weather alert, cautioning that parts of KwaZulu-Natal are likely to be affected by severe thunderstorms from the start of the weekend.

As outlined by SAWS, isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across the province on Friday, 30 January 2026.

Furthermore, some of these thunderstorms may intensify and become severe, potentially accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail.

In response to these conditions, SAWS has issued a Level 2 Warning for severe thunderstorms, which is expected to impact towns including Newcastle and Ladysmith, as well as Dannhauser, Dundee, Estcourt and Mooi River.

While the South African Weather Service has cautioned residents about the possible impacts associated with the anticipated inclement weather — including the risk of localised flooding — a closer examination of AccuWeather’s town-specific forecasts for Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid over the weekend provides further clarity:

During thunderstorms, the public is advised to exercise caution by securing loose objects, seeking appropriate shelter during intense lightning activity, and avoiding unnecessary travel should conditions deteriorate.

At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that weather conditions can change rapidly and often without warning.
