As large parts of KwaZulu-Natal continue to endure extreme heat, residents may experience temporary relief on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, potentially extending into Wednesday, 28 January 2026. This follows the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing a Level 2 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms over parts of the province.
According to SAWS, isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

These weather conditions could result in some storms intensifying over south-western areas, bringing heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail.
These conditions, SAWS warns, may have minor impacts on communities and infrastructure.
Consequently, SAWS predicts that the developing storms could cause localised damage to homes, public facilities, and settlements, while also flooding roads and bridges prone to stormwater accumulation.
In addition, the weather service highlighted that poor visibility and slippery conditions may result in minor traffic accidents, and that strong winds could lead to injuries from flying debris, underscoring the importance of public caution.
SAWS has identified the following towns and areas as being at the highest risk from the approaching severe thunderstorms:
- Ladysmith
- Underberg
- Greater Kokstad
- Estcourt
- Giants Castle
- Mooi River
- Okhahlamba
- Impendle
- Ingwe
- Indaka
- uMgeni
Residents in these regions are specifically advised to avoid travelling over bridges and low-lying roads, which may be vulnerable to flooding or sudden sinkholes as stormwater accumulates.
Moreover, SAWS has urged communities in affected regions to limit outdoor activities, warning that lightning strikes, hail, and floodwaters present a significant risk to life. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, follow updates from official channels, and ensure that emergency supplies and safety measures are in place to respond effectively to rapidly changing conditions.
Although the approaching thunderstorms may bring temporary relief from extreme temperatures, their severity underscores the importance of preparedness.
By heeding official advice and maintaining situational awareness, residents can reduce the risk of injury and property damage.
