Disaster management teams across KwaZulu-Natal are on high alert, with the KwaZulu‑Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), through the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, keeping a close watch on weather developments as heavy rainfall is forecast to affect large parts of the province over the weekend and on Monday, 20 October 2025.
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), severe thunderstorms are expected to impact the western regions of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), accompanied by strong winds, lightning, and heavy downpours that could result in localised flooding.
Furthermore, KZN CoGTA has confirmed that the Provincial Disaster Management Centre is coordinating efforts with key stakeholders — including municipalities, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), and various provincial departments — to ensure that effective measures are in place for a timely response to any incidents that may occur, particularly along major transport routes.
“We are in constant communication with all disaster management teams across the province to ensure readiness and rapid response. Our priority is the safety of all residents, and we urge communities to remain vigilant, particularly those in low-lying areas that are prone to flooding,” added KZN CoGTA MEC Buthelezi.
Meanwhile, communities across the province are urged to exercise heightened caution when travelling, especially at night, and to avoid crossing low-lying bridges or flooded roadways.
Motorists are further advised to reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance in adverse weather conditions to minimise the risk of accidents.
“The Department will continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates as necessary. Communities are encouraged to report any weather-related emergencies to their nearest municipal disaster management centre,” concluded KZN CoGTA.
As KwaZulu-Natal braces for the expected severe weather, residents are reminded that preparedness and vigilance remain the most effective defences against potential harm. Communities are encouraged to stay informed through official updates, support one another during emergencies, and prioritise safety at all times.
