Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has announced its plans to enter the South African market, signalling a major development in the country’s retail landscape. On Tuesday, 9 September 2025, the company confirmed it will open its first branded stores in South Africa later this year, bringing its globally recognised brand and retail expertise to the region.
With a presence spanning more than 10,750 stores in 19 countries, Walmart said the expansion underscores its commitment to making high-quality, affordable products accessible to more customers.
The announcement also follows the company’s inaugural Growth Summit held in April, which brought together suppliers from 12 African nations to showcase innovative products made, grown, or assembled locally.
The event led to the recruitment of small and medium-sized, Africa-based suppliers, highlighting Walmart’s focus on supporting regional entrepreneurship.

Kath McLay, Walmart International President and CEO, explained the company’s strategy, saying, “Walmart’s South African stores will offer a wide range of merchandise, including fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel and technology. Walmart also will offer a variety of locally sourced products. By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, Walmart will bring its signature Every Day Low Prices and global standards to the market, while celebrating the country’s rich culture.”
The retailer noted that its stores will provide customers with a comprehensive shopping experience, offering affordable groceries alongside a selection of family, home, and entertainment items, including international brands, in well-designed stores with wide aisles and friendly service.
Construction and preparation for these outlets are already underway, with official opening dates expected to be announced in October 2025. The company confirmed that it will provide further information on store locations, recruitment plans, and community initiatives in the coming months, while also rolling out digital capabilities designed to enhance the customer experience.
Miles Van Rensburg, Massmart President and CEO, said, “We’re thrilled to begin this journey introducing the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers and communities. By listening and working together, we aim to build lasting relationships and deliver a delightful shopping experience that reflects the needs and aspirations of South Africans.”
Elaborating further, Van Rensburg added, “Every rand matters when it comes to price. It is this balance and mindset on quality and Every Day Low Prices that enables us to deliver and build customer trust. We’re committed to providing an exceptional in-store experience at every customer touchpoint, from a warm welcome upon entering the store, to helpful assistance in the aisles and friendly, efficient checkout.”
The company highlighted that Walmart and the Walmart Foundation combine business expertise and philanthropic initiatives to create a positive impact in communities worldwide.
“The work includes support for creating economic mobility, building sustainable supply chains for people and the planet, and investing in resilient local communities. In South Africa, we are proud to invest in food security, disaster relief and support for local entrepreneurs,” the company said.
Walmart also confirmed it will continue investing in workforce development, community outreach, and sustainability programmes from the outset, helping to drive economic growth and support local causes in the regions it will serve.

By establishing a presence in South Africa, Walmart is positioning itself not only as a provider of affordable, high-quality products but also as a partner in economic development and community growth. Through global retail expertise, local supplier partnerships, and targeted social investment, the company aims to deliver an elevated shopping experience, strengthen trust with customers, and foster sustainable development across South Africa.
