KZN Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, confirmed that the seven inmates, who were awaiting trial, had been transported from Dundee to Ladysmith after appearing at the Dundee Magistrate’s Court with five other prisoners.

During the journey along Limit Hill Road in Ladysmith, Lieutenant Colonel Magwaza explained that the men forced open the rear door of the police bakkie and fled.

“Police managed to keep the other five suspects in custody,” stated the Lieutenant Colonel. He further emphasised that the escaped prisoners are facing serious charges, including robbery and housebreaking.

The situation is regarded as particularly grave since the prisoners were not handcuffed at the time of their escape.

Newcastillian News has formally requested the release of the detainees’ photographs. However, the SAPS has yet to provide them. In the meantime, authorities are appealing to the public for assistance and urge anyone with relevant information to report it at their nearest police station or contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Moreover, it should be noted that reports have stressed that the escapees fled on foot in the direction of the N11, placing residents across Northern KwaZulu-Natal at risk of contact with potentially dangerous individuals.

Furthermore, it should be explained that the decision not to restrain the prisoners was in line with the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998, which requires that inmates be transported in a manner that upholds their dignity.

Restraints may only be applied when essential for safety and security.

As police teams from Dundee, Glencoe, Wasbank, and Ladysmith, supported by K9 units, intensify the search, the seven men remain at large. This is an unfolding case, and Newcastillian News will continue to provide updates as soon as law enforcement releases the photographs of the fugitives or confirms their capture.
