The incident occurred on Thursday evening, 14 August 2025, shortly after 6 pm.

According to Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam, the woman had just entered her car when the suspects climbed in. They forced her to hand over her bank card and disclose her PIN code, after which they immediately withdrew funds from her account. In addition, the perpetrators stole her phone, preventing her from contacting authorities in the immediate aftermath of the robbery in Newcastle.

Although investigations are ongoing, robberies in Newcastle’s CBD are increasingly common, with the South African Police Service receiving multiple reports almost daily. This pattern underscores the urgent need for Newcastle SAPS crime prevention measures to address the rising threat in the area.

Speaking on the matter, Amajuba District SAPS spokesperson, Constable Nonjabulo Langa, confirmed that the district welcomed 30 new constables on Saturday, 16 August 2025.

“These officers will be allocated to areas within the district that are considered hotspots in terms of crime. This means that the new constables will be placed at Newcastle, Madadeni, Osizweni and Dannhauser,” she said.

Furthermore, Constable Langa emphasised that the new officers will not be confined to their stations. “These constables will be conducting foot patrols in their respective communities at areas which the SAPS has earmarked as hotspots for crimes. In Newcastle, this means that the new constables will be charged with ensuring incidents such as this robbery will be addressed and minimised.”

Ultimately, as the 30 new constables prepare to hit the streets and confront the growing crime trends, the question remains whether they will be able to restore law and order in Newcastle’s CBD.

Their presence alone cannot reverse the rise in robberies and criminal activity, and their effectiveness will depend on consistent deployment, strategic patrols, and the ability to respond rapidly to incidents. While the initiative signals a stronger law enforcement effort, only time will reveal whether these measures are sufficient to make a meaningful difference in the town’s crime landscape.
