A motorist escaped severe injury following a collision on Newcastle’s Drakensberg Drive on Monday morning, 30 June 2025. The driver lost control of their vehicle, which subsequently collided with a lamp post and a tree before overturning and coming to rest in the central median. Remarkably, a pedestrian narrowly avoided being struck during the incident.

An eyewitness recounted the startling event, stating that she was travelling along Drakensberg Drive when a small truck allegedly overtook her vehicle at high speed.
“The driver came past, lost control of his vehicle, and he nearly hit a man who was jogging at the time, then he hit the lamp pole, hit the tree and flipped. The man who was jogging had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit,” the eyewitness reported.

Law enforcement and emergency services promptly attended the scene. Charles Steyn of Magenta Emergency Medical Services confirmed that the driver sustained only minor injuries.
As to be expected, the incident is currently under investigation by the authorities, who are examining all contributing factors.
Furthermore, the collision on Drakensberg Drive serves as a stark reminder of the significant influence driver conduct has on public safety.
While the driver fortunately sustained only minor injuries, the incident’s potential for a tragic outcome—particularly given the near-miss with a pedestrian—must not be underestimated.
