Mediclinic Newcastle Launches Dedicated Acute Kidney Care

A progressive new chapter in healthcare has commenced in Newcastle with the launch of Mediclinic Newcastle’s new acute renal dialysis unit . This development reflects the hospital’s commitment to enhancing the standard of medical care provided to its patients.

For context, an in-house renal unit for acute patients offers specialised treatment for individuals with acute kidney injury (AKI) or acute episodes of chronic kidney disease.

Moreover, these units are designed to manage severe kidney-related conditions that require prompt and coordinated medical intervention.

Their key functions include:

  • Dialysis Services:  Provides acute haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis for patients experiencing sudden kidney failure, supporting the removal of waste products, toxins, and excess fluids.
  • Monitoring and Stabilisation:  Offers continuous monitoring and treatment for complications such as fluid overload, electrolyte imbalances, acidosis, or uraemia.
  • Multidisciplinary Care: Involves nephrologists, renal nurses, dietitians, and other medical professionals in delivering personalised treatment plans that address underlying causes such as infections, dehydration, or drug toxicity.
  • Diagnostic Support: Facilitates diagnostic testing, including bloodwork and imaging, to evaluate kidney function and determine the cause of acute renal issues.
  • Critical Care Integration: Works in conjunction with intensive and high-care units to support critically ill patients, including the provision of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) when required.
  • Patient Education: Assists patients in transitioning to long-term care by offering guidance on lifestyle adjustments and ongoing dialysis management.

Commenting on the new renal unit, Mediclinic Newcastle’s Acting Nurse Manager, Avril Daniels, stated, “Today marks a major milestone in our ongoing efforts to provide continuous improvements in patient care, particularly through the introduction of an in-house renal unit for our acute patients. This achievement reflects our shared vision of delivering high-quality care where and when it’s needed most.”

Building on this, Mediclinic Renal Services’ Clinical Operations Manager, Wouter de Ruyter, added that the unit aims to enhance the quality of dialysis care and align with ongoing medical advancements at the hospital.

“Eventually, we would like to see the renal unit develop into a chronic renal facility where Mediclinic Newcastle will be able to accept outpatients as well,” emphasised de Ruyter.

Daniels further noted that the unit and its team will operate in line with Mediclinic Southern Africa’s protocols, maintaining consistent standards of care and supporting long-term patient management.

Hospital General Manager, Japie Greyling said that the hospital is thrilled to announce the launch of acute renal dialysis for in-patients at Mediclinic Newcastle.

“This service offers critical care and enhances the hospital’s commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare solutions to our community. By integrating this service, we aim to improve patient outcomes and ensure that residents have access to essential medical treatments close to home,” emphasised Greyling.

The introduction of this unit represents a strategic step in expanding healthcare services in the region, ensuring patients receive premium health care without the need to travel.

As the unit evolves to include outpatient care, Mediclinic Newcastle aims to increase its reach and continue delivering specialised services to the broader community.
