WATCH: Leak Triggers Brief Fire at ArcelorMittal Newcastle Facility

A dense cloud of smoke rose from ArcelorMittal South Africa’s Newcastle Works after a minor fire erupted at its gas plant on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, caused by a leak in the COG line. In order to clarify exactly what transpired, following various speculations, Newcastillian News spoke with AMSA on the subject.

Tami Didiza, Group Manager of Stakeholder Management and Communications at AMSA’s corporate office, confirmed that immediate measures were enacted, with robust safety protocols ensuring the well-being of all personnel.

“The flame was extinguished, and the area was secured for maintenance. Thanks to our team’s swift response and effective emergency procedures, there were no injuries. We also promptly informed environmental authorities of the incident, as part of our commitment to transparence and responsible operations. We are working diligently to repair the COG line and resume normal operations. We appreciate the prompt and efficient response from our Coke team and are committed to ensuring the safety and reliability of our operations,” said Didiza.
