Following days of relentless downpours that left Newcastle and several surrounding towns in KwaZulu-Natal waterlogged, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that the stormy conditions are far from over. This comes as SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms for Thursday, 26 February 2025, urging residents to prepare for further adverse weather.

Scattered to isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, with some storms predicted to become severe over the north-western parts of KZN.
SAWS has cautioned that these storms may bring excessive lightning, destructive winds, hail, and torrential downpours, increasing the risk of localised flooding.
As per the weather service’s warning, the following towns are forecast to be affected by the severe thunderstorms:
- Newcastle
- Ladysmith
- Dannhauser
- Estcourt
- Mooi River
- Giants Castle
- Sobabili
- Okhahlamba
Furthermore, SAWS has stressed that these towns could face several negative impacts due to the impending thunderstorms, including:
- Localised flooding of susceptible roads.
- Localised damage to infrastructure, vehicles, settlements, livelihoods, and livestock.
- Localised injuries and danger to life due to lightning.
- Power surges due to excessive lightning.
With many of these areas already saturated from previous heavy rains, SAWS is urging residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas, as these may not only be prone to flooding but could also be compromised by sinkholes.
Additionally, the public is warned to stay indoors where possible and avoid outdoor activities during the storms, as lightning, hail, and flash flooding pose serious risks.

SAWS has emphasised the importance of remaining away from windows, securing vehicles under cover, and ensuring that pets and livestock are sheltered from the severe conditions.
