Three Dead and Multiple Injured in Tragic Collisions Near Newcastle and Vryheid

Two devastating collisions have cast a shadow over the close of the year, claiming three lives and leaving several others injured, including a one-year-old baby.

On Sunday afternoon, 29 December 2024, a horrific collision occurred along the N11, Amajuba Pass, near Newcastle.

While the exact circumstances around the incident remain unclear at the moment, Craig Both, the Spokesperson for KwaZulu Private Ambulance explained that when paramedics arrived on the scene, they discovered that two vehicles had been involved in a head-on collision.

“Two occupants tragically succumbed to their injuries prior to the arrival of emergency services. Furthermore, one patient sustained critical injuries and was entrapped within their vehicle. Another patient suffered serious injuries. With the assistance of Fire and Rescue Services, specialised rescue equipment was utilised to extricate the critically injured patient,” said Botha.

Both injured patients received on-scene stabilisation before being transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

Looking at the second incident; On Saturday night, 29 December 2024, a collision occurred on the R34, near Mnancamana, outside Vryheid. The incident involved a car and a truck, and the severity of the crash triggered an immediate response from KwaZulu Private Ambulance and other emergency services.

Botha described the scene as deeply distressing. “Upon arrival, paramedics discovered a chaotic scene with two vehicles severely damaged. The impact of the collision left one occupant tragically deceased before emergency services could reach the scene,” said Botha.

The remaining occupants sustained a range of injuries, including two individuals critically injured, two seriously injured—including an infant—and four others with minor injuries.

“One critically injured patient was trapped within the wreckage, necessitating the use of specialised rescue equipment to extricate them. All injured individuals received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment,” Botha explained.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collision, which remains unclear at this time.
