A sombre discovery unfolded along Sutherland Street on Thursday morning, 7 November 2024, as community members gathered outside the taxi rank, compelled by a mixture of concern and curiosity. The area was cordoned off by police officials, while traffic officers diverted vehicles from the scene. The arrival of the morgue van, trailed closely by Newcastle Municipal firefighters, marked the gravity of the situation.
Kept back by officials, onlookers watched as police prepared to address the disturbing scene.
Furthermore, it was confirmed that a man’s lifeless body was discovered in the river that winds along Sutherland Street, near the bustling taxi rank.
Describing the sequence of events, an official on the scene revealed that the body had been spotted by a passerby walking along the road. “The man explained that he had been walking along Sutherland Street, taking in his surroundings, when he glanced into the river and noticed the deceased. Luckily, a police vehicle was patrolling nearby, allowing the passerby to signal the officers and alert them to the scene. Not long after, a traffic officer also patrolling the area saw the police vehicle pulled over and stopped to see if any assistance was needed,” the source stated.
Realising the severity of the discovery, additional police units, emergency medical services, traffic officers and local firefighters were immediately summoned to the location.
Traffic officials ensured that the scene remained secured, while firefighters prepared to assist the police to retrieve the body from the river.
As emergency personnel worked diligently to piece together how the man ended up in the water, the official emphasised that a full investigation would be necessary to determine the precise cause of death. “Police will need to conduct thorough investigations to understand exactly what occurred. However, if anyone has any information regarding this tragic incident, they are strongly encouraged to come forward and report it to Newcastle SAPS,” a source urged.
