A devastating head-on collision on the R34 near Memel in the early hours of Saturday, 5 October 2024, left one person dead and several others severely injured.
Craig Botha, the Spokesperson for KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service, revealed the gravity of the scene emergency responders encountered.
“Upon arrival, emergency responders were confronted with a scene of utter devastation. The two vehicles were mangled beyond recognition,” Botha stated.
According to Botha, paramedics found seven individuals critically injured. They immediately set to work, battling against time to stabilise the victims, offering urgent medical attention right at the crash site. Once stabilised, the patients were immediately transported to a hospital for further care.
Despite the relentless commitment from the emergency team, Botha said, “Sadly, despite all efforts, one occupant succumbed to their injuries before emergency services could transport the patient to the hospital.”
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine the cause of this heart-wrenching incident.
