A shocking sight emerged along Marconi Drive—a substantial amount of expired condoms discarded in a large pile beside the road. Upon investigation, it became clear that these condoms were not sourced from a local business. Instead, they bore the unmistakable branding of government issued contraceptives, proudly displaying the Department of Health logo.

A closer look at the packaging revealed a further troubling detail: these condoms had expired in October 2022.
Furthermore, the discovery was made by a horrified resident travelling along Marconi Drive on Wednesday afternoon, 2 October 2024. “This is absolutely disgusting and should not be tolerated. Whoever is responsible for this needs to be held accountable,” declared the resident, who has chosen to remain anonymous.
Further voicing their concerns, the resident pointed out that, given the condoms were government-issued, there must surely be established protocols for their proper disposal. “Illegal dumping is already a significant problem, and now we have this situation on top of it. Surely, there should be a plan in place to handle expired condoms appropriately. If that’s not the case, there’s always the dumpsite that could have been used instead of carelessly leaving them here,” the resident emphasised.

Following the discovery, a critical question came to the forefront: who is accountable for the dumping of numerous government-issued products?
In light of the incident, Newcastle Municipality’s Cllr Faizel Cassim expressed his outrage at the sight of the discarded condoms.
“Dumping of state resources is not acceptable. This matter needs to be investigated, and someone must be made accountable. The Department of Health should investigate this,” he emphasised, further noting he would escalate the matter to the relevant departments and track those responsible through the barcodes on the packaging.
Cllr Cassim further noted that the condoms had to have been dumped during the afternoon, as he had travelled along the road earlier that day, and the condoms had not been there at the time.
Adding to the conversation, Imran Keeka, Member of the Provincial Parliament for KwaZulu-Natal representing the Democratic Alliance and Chairperson of the KZN Legislature Health Portfolio Committee, said, “The KZN Department of Health distributes them and is responsible for monitoring condom usage. It needs to be established through batch numbers why they were allowed to sit somewhere and expire, and why they were illegally dumped like this.”
Newcastillian News contacted the Amajuba District offices of the KZN Department of Health for an official statement. However, they were unable to provide one at the time of publication. However, an official source from the Department explained that the condoms were not dumped by the Department itself.
Instead, the source claimed that a former distributor, who had lost the necessary contract to continue distributing the condoms, was responsible. The source claimed this saw the situation reportedly escalating into a court battle, which the distributor lost, allegedly prompting him to dump the remaining stock he had on hand.
“The Department will investigate the matter further though. Furthermore, a team from the Department was sent out to the site to collect the expired condoms and dispose of them in the appropriate manner,” said the official source.

Both Newcastillian News and the Newcastle Municipality have verified that the discarded contraceptives have been collected.
