A sharp chill gripped Newcastle on Saturday, 21 September 2024, as snowfall blanketed the town, transforming it into a picturesque wonderland. Yet, beneath the serene surface, a much darker reality unfolded, as the bodies of two individuals were discovered in separate locations across the town.
Newcastle SAPS Spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam confirmed the discoveries, starting with the first body found on Gutenberg Street around 8:40 am.
According to police reports verified by Arumugam, a passerby, making his way down the road, was the one to stumble upon the lifeless form. The chilling contrast of the body against the snow sent a wave of dread through the bystander, who immediately notified the authorities.
Braving the biting cold, police officers hurried to the scene, hoping the man might still be alive. Led to the grim sight by the passerby, officers quickly realised that it was too late—the man had already succumbed to death.
The day took another horrific turn as members of the public made a second, gruesome discovery at the Terminus Street Bus Rank, connected to the bustling taxi rank.
Newcastle SAPS rushed to the scene once more, where bystanders, visibly shaken by the sight, guided them to the location of the second body.
With two lives tragically lost, Arumugam confirmed that inquest cases have been opened for both deaths. While the identity of the first victim remains unknown, police have since confirmed the identity of the second deceased. The cause of death for both men, however, remains shrouded in mystery.
Arumugam stated, “Investigations into the two cases are still underway to establish exactly what happened.”
Though it remains unclear whether the bitter cold claimed their lives or if foul play is involved, Arumugam assured the public that the Newcastle SAPS will leave no stone unturned in solving these deaths.
