Kirkland Street was alive with activity on Wednesday morning, 11 September 2024, as paramedics, traffic officers, and police attended a scene that had captured the attention of passing motorists. The aftermath of a collision between a VW Polo and an Audi SUV, just outside Mi-Ka Fruit and Veg, had onlookers craning their necks to glimpse at the unfolding drama.
As learned after arriving on the scene, the VW Polo had slammed into the rear of the Audi, prompting paramedics to attend to the occupants of both vehicles.
Meanwhile, law enforcement officers worked to piece together what had transpired, and tow trucks were already on hand to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
A police officer at the scene noted that the circumstances surrounding the crash were still unclear, with officials busy gathering statements. However, an eyewitness offered insight, recounting the moments leading up to the collision.
“We were standing by the side of the road when we saw the Audi coming down. The driver just slammed on the brakes without turning on their hazards. The Polo didn’t have a chance to stop,” said the witness.
However, another witness on the scene explained that a third vehicle had been in front of the Audi, and had suddenly stopped to turn into a nearby shop, forcing the Audi to slam on brakes to avoid crashing into it. This, in turn, resulted in the Polo crashing into the Audi.
Furthermore, the driver of the Polo was reportedly on a school run, transporting their children.
Magenta Emergency Medical Services confirmed that while no major injuries were sustained, a young child, around seven years old, had begun complaining of headaches following the incident. It is still unknown whether the symptoms were caused by the accident, but this will be further investigated.
Police have now launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision.
