With over two decades of steadfast dedication, ER24 has distinguished itself as a premier leader in emergency medical services. Over the past 24 years, the organisation has consistently advanced its capabilities, operating an extensive network of 59 strategically positioned bases across South Africa.
ER24’s comprehensive suite of services is designed to meet the highest standards of emergency response and pre-hospital care, catering to both public and private healthcare sectors.
The company’s offerings encompass aeromedical services and evacuations, medical concierge services, medical case management, international patient management, hospital in-patient referrals, medical repatriation, minor escorting, and the dignified repatriation of mortal remains.
As ER24 continues to focus on delivering exceptional healthcare and a broad spectrum of services, the company stands on the brink of a significant milestone in its history. On Saturday, 24 August 2024, ER24’s CEO Ben Johnson announced, “We are celebrating our ‘Crown Birthday’ where ER24 celebrates 24 years of delivering excellence in pre-hospital care.” This milestone marks ER24’s 24th anniversary on the 24th of August, 2024.
Reflecting on the company’s growth and the significant milestones achieved by ER24, Johnson highlighted the remarkable progress since its inception in 2000.
These milestones include:
- ER24 transformed from delivering services via a network of providers to owning its own fleet around the country from 2002 to 2004.
- In 2006, ER24 became a 100% subsidiary of Mediclinic Southern Africa
- In 2007, ER24 saw Corporate Solutions and Fund Management Solutions business units established to provide commercial service offerings to companies and funders.
- During 2012, ER24 established Trauma Support with a strong focus on mental wellness.
- Then 2014, ER24 noted a strategic shift from an emergency medical service to a multi-experience assistance environment.
- In 2020, ER24 responded rapidly to support businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the development of the ER24 virtual app and other digital transformation initiatives.
- 2022 saw the development of NextGen Core technology to streamline integration between ER24 business units, service providers and hospitals to enhance the patient journey and experience.
- During the course of 2023, ER24 received Council of Medical Schemes (CMS) accreditation that allows the company to provide Limited Administration to medical schemes.
“But key elements for me are the launch of Events Solutions in 2001, beginning our own in-house training support to grow quality healthcare professionals, the inclusion of Aeromedical and Global Assist Solutions in 2009. A great expansion was us moving into the Site Based Services arena – where we can support mining, oil, gas and other industrial clients with their occupational health needs,” said Johnson.
Moreover, the ER24 CEO revealed some exciting developments in the company’s Contact Centre operations.
According to Johnson, ER24 launched the widely recognised 084 124 number in 2023, a significant step in improving accessibility for their clients. “And in 2017 we introduced Vodacom 112 Emergency Services to enhance accessibility for clients with hearing or speech impairments. Most recently, we have launched our services internationally, and we will be focusing on Africa to expand our reach and bring greater quality support to remote areas,” explained Johnson.
As ER24 celebrates its Crown Birthday, commemorating 24 years of exceptional service, Johnson expressed his excitement and optimism for the future. “Our expansion into Africa is definitely a great cause for excitement – not only are we bringing clients into Mediclinic hospitals for quality care, but we are offering our clients a one-stop-shop across different countries of operation. Knowing that the service they receive in South Africa is accessible to operations elsewhere across the continent.”
With the 24th birthday celebrations in full swing, Johnson emphasised that ER24’s remarkable success is a testament to the dedication of its employees.
“Quality care begins and ends with the human touch – and it is the medics and other operators across our business that allow us to reach and support our clients when they need real help, real fast. I would like to extend my appreciation to each of our employees – you are the reason for our success. My heartfelt gratitude also goes to everyone who trusts us with their care every day. Your support and loyalty have been pivotal in making ER24 the trusted name it is today,” concluded Johnson.
