On the evening of Friday, 16 August 2024, a truck driver endured a horrifying experience when he was attacked and stabbed during an attempted hijacking. The incident unfolded rapidly, but thankfully, local paramedics were quick to arrive, dedicated to ensuring the man’s survival given the severity of his injuries.
The incident unfolded at the N11 and Albert Wessels Drive intersection, when the Newcastle SAPS were notified of the crime, and called for assistance.
Upon arriving at the scene, police officials found ER24 paramedics and traffic officers already working to aid the injured driver. The emergency responders reported that the truck driver disclosed he was the target of an attempted hijacking. The assailants, whose exact number remains undisclosed, had halted the truck before initiating their violent assault.
Discussing the matter, Ziyaad Warasally, the branch manager of ER24 Emergency Medical Services in Newcastle, explained, “I received a call from Magenta EMS at 7:31pm asking if we could assist a truck driver who had fallen victim to an attempted hijacking. When the ER24 team arrived, they found the man with multiple stab wounds and in critical condition. The crew worked swiftly to stabilise him at the scene before transporting him to hospital.”
Despite the disorderly state of the crime scene, Warasally confirmed that ER24 paramedics are well-trained to deal with high-risk emergencies. He further stated that his team was fully prepared to address any unforeseen complications that might arise while on site.
Furthermore, the suspects had already fled by the time emergency services reached the scene.
As the victim undergoes vital medical treatment at a nearby hospital, Warasally emphasised the critical importance of swift action in such emergencies. “If you are stabbed, you should apply direct pressure to the wound using clean and sterile materials. Having a first aid kit and training allows you to dress the wound while waiting for emergency personnel.” He also emphasised that carrying first aid supplies and having the necessary training in one’s vehicle could prove invaluable in such critical situations.
With the victim now recovering and his truck secured, Newcastle SAPS Station Commander Brigadier Vassie Naidoo confirmed that Newcastle Police are currently investigating the crime and are searching for the suspects to ensure they face justice for their actions.
