SAWS issues Level 2 Warning as fierce winds target various KZN towns

Weekend weather forecast for Newcastle, Ladysmith, and Dundee

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has sounded the alarm with a Level 2 Warning for damaging winds across various KwaZulu-Natal towns.

This comes as a cold front is anticipated to sweep across Southern KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, 14 August 2024, accompanied by a coastal low along the KZN Coast.

SAWS has highlighted that this combination will unleash powerful westerly to south-westerly winds, with gusts reaching up to 40 knots in certain areas of the western parts. This will apparently lead to localised damage to settlements and temporary structures, while also heightening the risk of runaway fires.

The towns expected to bear the brunt of these damaging winds include:

  • Newcastle
  • Ladysmith
  • Dannhauser
  • Underberg
  • Utrecht
  • Dundee
  • Greater Kokstad
  • Estcourt
  • Giants Castle
  •  Mooi River
  • Sobabili
  • Indaka
  • Okhlamba
  • uMngeni
  • Umzimkhulu
  • Impendle
  • Ingwe

SAWS has issued a stern warning regarding the potential impacts of these destructive winds, urging the public to brace for:

  • Disruptions to roads due to crosswinds and fallen debris.
  • Localised damage to temporary structures.
  • Possible disruptions to transport routes and travel services.
  • An increased risk of localised runaway fires.

As these menacing winds prepare to sweep through numerous towns in KwaZulu-Natal, SAWS is advising the public to take immediate precautions. Residents are urged to secure any loose objects, stay updated with the latest weather information, and be alert for potential road closures caused by fallen trees and debris. Drivers are particularly cautioned to be mindful of crosswinds and stronger gusts in exposed areas.
