Nine people were injured following a collision along the R34, coming from Utrecht towards Newcastle, approximately 8km before the N11 T-junction.
The incident transpired at around 2 pm when a light motor vehicle crashed into the rear of a taxi carrying passengers.
While the exact circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear, Road Angels South Africa and KwaZulu Private Ambulance reported heavy smoke along the road due to firebreaks being conducted in the area. It is believed that the smoke from these firebreaks resulted in poor visibility, contributing to the collision.
Emergency responders from KwaZulu Private Ambulance and Magenta Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene to assist the injured, while Atlas Towing worked to clear the wreckage and prevent further accidents.
According to KwaZulu Private Ambulance, two occupants from the light motor vehicle sustained serious injuries, while seven passengers from the taxi suffered minor injuries.
As this incident is now under investigation, and with fires being a common sight during the winter season, Road Angels South Africa has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when travelling on roads with poor visibility and to avoid taking unnecessary risks.
