A wrecked Nissan Sentra lay battered along the N11 on Monday afternoon, 24 June 2024, following a collision with a truck. The incident unfolded just before 2 pm, along the N11 route from Newcastle to Volksrust, mere metres from the RTI offices.
A police official at the scene revealed that both vehicles were heading from Newcastle when the crash occurred.
The vehicles were allegedly driving in the direction of Volksrust on the N11 from Newcastle, when the truck is believed to have struck the Nissan Sentra from the back, seeing the car coming to a standstill on the grass along the side of the road.
“However, the exact cause remains unclear, but fire breaks were being conducted in the area, creating a smoky haze that severely reduced visibility on the N11. It’s suspected this contributed to the collision, but the matter is under thorough investigation,” stated the police source.
As tendrils of smoke clung to the air and the smell of burned grass hung heavy, paramedics attended to the occupants of both vehicles. Additionally, traffic officials worked diligently to manage the scene, while Atlas Towing prepared to clear the wreckage.
A paramedic on site confirmed only one person was injured and fortunately, the injuries were not serious. The police official corroborated this, easing fears of a tragic outcome.
Amid the flurry of emergency response, officials issued a stern warning to motorists to exercise extreme caution on national roads, particularly during the winter season. Officials explained that fire breaks and veld fires can drastically impair visibility, demanding heightened vigilance from all drivers.
