House fire on Dixon Street, Newcastle claims one person’s life

A devastating house fire erupted on Thursday night, 6 June 2024, on Dixon Street, Newcastle, resulting in the tragic death of a woman.

According to an official police source, the house was being used for communal accommodation, and it was suspected that the fire had started inside one of the rooms before spreading rapidly throughout the house.

This was confirmed by an official from the Protection Services, who noted that the fire was reported to firefighters and law enforcement at approximately 6:30 pm.

A resident from the area, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the fire was allegedly started when a woman found her boyfriend in the house with another woman.

However, this is not confirmed with the police source acknowledging that they had heard this allegation but could not verify its accuracy at this stage.

Adding to this, Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam stated, “An inquest case has been opened, and police investigations into the matter are underway.”

She further pointed out that no arrests had been made, as police are still to establish what transpired.

As further investigations continue, anyone with information that could assist the SAPS in the matter is urged to contact them immediately.
