Newcastle Municipality: Project to end loadshedding on the cards

How the 2025 Eskom Tariff Hike Could Reshape South African Economies

Newcastillians have enjoyed a reprieve from the burden of loadshedding for just over a month. However, the looming threat of further power outages remains a reality with many people having some form of “loadshedding anxiety” regarding its return.

Nevertheless, there appears to be a game plan on the cards for Newcastle to see the town eradicate loadshedding entirely, thanks to an initiative from the Newcastle Municipality.

This initiative was disclosed by Newcastle Municipality’s Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube, during the 5th Generation Integrated Development Plan Mayoral Roadshow on Tuesday, 30 April 2024, held at the Newcastle Show Grounds.

At the event, Cllr Dube highlighted the Municipality’s implementation of an energy generation programme. According to the Mayor, this programme aims to generate a minimum of 100 megawatts of electricity through collaborations with independent power producers.

While the proposed date for community involvement is yet to be announced, the Municipality is presently engaged in discussions with a potential independent power producer. Although the company’s identity remains under wraps at this stage, the project is anticipated to benefit various wards across Newcastle, mitigating the frequency and impact of loadshedding in the area.

As the Municipality takes proactive measures to alleviate the effects of loadshedding in the town, Cllr Dube noted that a council meeting would need to be convened to deliberate on the project’s finer details.

This is a developing story and therefore, your input is imperative. Be sure to let us know your take on this in the comment section below.

  6. Keep it simple says:

Lets do the old strategy…..put timers on geysers in a city wide effort. And we all put our geysers off for a period of time each day, in exchange for no loadshedding. It worked before quite nicely and a lot of us still have the geyser switches.

  7. Lourens says:

Election story. After the election nothing will happen.
Loadsjedding will also return after the election should the anc win
