The eMadlangeni (Utrecht) Municipality, in partnership with Uitkomst Mine Colliery, has embarked on the journey to establish a Disaster Management Centre within the Utrecht community, marking the first step in this crucial initiative.
The Municipality recently held an official handover ceremony for the site designated for Phase 1 of the long-awaited disaster centre, located on Plein Street, Utrecht.
Reflecting on the project, eMadlangeni Municipal Mayor, Cllr Mzwakhe Buthelezi, remarked, “This is a significant milestone for our community as we strengthen our disaster management capabilities. The establishment of the Disaster Centre will play a crucial role in ensuring efficient response to our residents during times of disaster.”
According to the Municipality’s Communications Unit, the facility would serve as a centralised hub equipped with essential resources and staffed by trained personnel to efficiently respond to emergencies. It would also act as a coordination point for disaster response efforts, offering vital services, support, and relief to affected individuals.
The Municipality’s Communications Unit further clarified that this Public Private Partnership emerged from the collaboration between Uitkomst Mine Colliery, the primary project funder, and the Municipality, serving as the implementing agent.
As the eMadlangeni Municipality demonstrated its commitment to strengthening its disaster management capabilities, the Communications Unit announced the imminent construction of the eMadlangeni Municipality Emergency Services Centre, scheduled for completion within four months.
“The second phase will be a fully functional disaster management centre, contingent upon the sourcing of funds to complete the existing centre,” highlighted the Communications Unit.
