The incident unfolded at around 11:30 am, as the driver of the bakkie made a turn from Hardwick Street onto Allen Street.

According to the driver’s account, he became aware of the woman’s presence on the central aisle of the road, a short distance away from the traffic lights, as he turned onto the road.

“She then tried to cross the road, and I attempted to slam on brakes and swerve, but there was another car in the left lane, and I ended up making contact with the pedestrian,” said the driver in a state of shock.

The impact left the woman injured, with minor injuries to her face, one of her arms, and her left leg.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance paramedics arrived at the scene, providing initial care to the injured woman before transferring her to the hospital for further evaluation.

As authorities further investigate the incident, traffic officials at the scene took the opportunity to encourage pedestrians to use designated crossing points at various intersections in Newcastle for their safety.
