The mishap occurred just after 4 pm, around 50 kilometres outside of Newcastle when the motorist and a passenger were en route from Newcastle to Volksrust.

Charles Steyn from Magenta Emergency Medical Services (Magenta EMS) provided details, stating, “The motorist wanted to overtake the vehicles ahead of him, and as he tried to pass the vehicles, he saw there was oncoming traffic which resulted in him swerving to miss them.”

As a result, the motorist’s evasive action led the vehicle off the road, traversing a ditch before colliding with a tree. Responding to the scene both Magenta EMS and KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services (KZN EMS) arrived to tend to the injured.

According to Steyn, the driver sustained minor injuries and received medical attention from Magenta EMS before being transported to a hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, the passenger suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital by KZN EMS.

With both occupants now hospitalised, and one in critical condition, a plea is being made to motorists to exercise the utmost caution when overtaking other vehicles.
