In a landmark ruling, Letagang Refiloe and Nyembe Mhleni have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder and aggravated robbery of a Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal police officer back in 2021.
Lizzy Arumurgam, the spokesperson for Newcastle South African Police Service (SAPS), provided detailed insights into the case.
According to Arumurgam, the tragic incident occurred on 26 September 2021, when Refiloe and Mhleni ambushed the unsuspecting police officer, taking his life in a callous act before fleeing with his state issued firearm.
However, the Newcastle Detective Task Team swiftly tracked down Letagang Refiloe and Nyembe Mhleni, cutting short their bid for escape. On 5 October 2021, the team successfully apprehended both individuals, bringing them into police custody.
The diligent efforts of Sergeant SX Kunene and Investigating Officer Sergeant SP Mngomezulu from the Newcastle Detectives Task Team proved pivotal in building an airtight case against the two suspects.
Their relentless pursuit of justice ultimately culminated in the trial of Refiloe and Mhleni at the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
Arumurgam shared the outcome of the trial, stating, “On June 14, 2023, the Pietermaritzburg High Court ensured that justice was duly served by convicting Refiloe and Mhleni to life imprisonment for the charge of murder, and an additional 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.”
