In an effort to address the poor condition of several roads in the province, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is gearing up for a significant change.
As part of their commitment to transforming KwaZulu-Natal into a bustling construction site, the Department has announced the imminent launch of four major construction projects. These projects, collectively valued at almost R1 billion, are poised to bring substantial investment to the region.

Emphasising the importance of government-led economic recovery, job creation, and skills development, the KZN Department of Transport stated, “The investment of close to R1 billion combined will ensure access to important economic centers and improve mobility in the province.”
The construction of new projects, while simultaneously maintaining existing infrastructure, stands as a key priority for the provincial government. In line with this objective, the Department recently unveiled a R49 million rehabilitation project for the main road P189 in Ladysmith. Additionally, improvement plans for local roads were initiated.
On Tuesday, May 30, 2023, MEC Sipho Hlomuka is scheduled to inaugurate the completed D1252 road in Loskop, situated within the iNkosi Langalibalele (Estcourt) Local Municipality. The project, valued at R114 million, is set to bring significant benefits to the area.
The KZN Department of Transport also noted the forthcoming launch of various local projects under the Mazibuko Traditional Council.
Continuing the infrastructure push, MEC Hlomuka will commence the construction of a major bridge connecting uMsinga and iNquthu on Thursday, June 1, 2023. Known as the Buffalo River Bridge, this project carries a price tag exceeding R78 million. Simultaneously, the Department will commission motor license services to the uMsinga local municipality, aimed at assisting local motorists and dealerships.
On Friday, June 2, 2023, MEC Hlomuka will initiate an extensive rehabilitation project on the renowned Marine Drive, also known as P359, connecting Port Shepstone, Margate, and other key tourism hubs in the area. The project, valued at R580 million, is expected to generate employment opportunities for unemployed youth and offer benefits to emerging contractors.
Concluding the series of launches, MEC Hlomuka will kickstart the construction of the Cabane River Bridge in uMzimkhulu, located in the Harry Gwala District, on Saturday, June 3, 2023. With an investment of R34 million, this bridge holds immense potential for the region.
MEC Hlomuka expressed his commitment to improved service delivery, stating, “We are serious about reconnecting with the people through enhanced infrastructure and service delivery. Our focus on infrastructure delivery, as outlined in both the State of the Province Address and the Department of Transport’s Budget Policy Speech, is crucial for boosting the local economy and improving the lives of our citizens.”
