The incident occurred on April 18, 2023, after irate residents from Blaauwbosch and the Newcastle Mayor’s bodyguards had an alleged altercation.

Police reports indicate that the incident unfolded when Madadeni police received a complaint at Rosal Clinic in Blaauwbosch, where a gunshot had gone through the clinic’s kitchen window and into the wall.

“When we arrived at the scene, we were able to confirm the matter. According to information received, there were community members who blocked the road, complaining about electricity issues,” said an official police source.

The source added that during the altercation, the Newcastle Mayor’s bodyguards tried to disperse the crowds and chased away the community members. However, during this time, gunshots were fired into the air, with one of them passing through the clinic’s window.

Although there are allegations that the Mayor’s bodyguards were responsible for the gunshot, it cannot be confirmed who fired the shots until the investigations are complete.

At the time of publication, the Newcastle Municipality had not provided any comment on the incident.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact the police.
