High speed chase ends in police vehicle crash in Newcastle

An alleged high-speed pursuit has ended in a crash involving a police vehicle and a tree at the intersection of Montague Street and Harding Street.

The incident took place on Monday, 24 April 2023, shortly before 11 am. According to a police source, the police vehicle was chasing a suspect from Madadeni.

“The chase started in Madadeni, with the police pursuing the suspect into Newcastle. The suspect was driving recklessly which resulted in the police vehicle crashing into a tree,” explained the police source.

Four police officers who were in the vehicle sustained injuries and were subsequently taken to the hospital for further treatment.

A second vehicle was also impacted by the police vehicle, although police on the scene were unable to confirm if it was indeed the suspect’s car.

Newcastle SAPS Spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam was contacted for further details, but she stated that she would be able to provide more information as soon as it becomes available.

“This is a developing story, and Newcastillian News will keep residents updated as soon as further information is made available,” stated the authorities on the scene.
