The Amajuba District Municipality has taken an important step in advancing the tourism sector in Newcastle and its neighbouring towns of Dannhauser and eMadlangeni (Utrecht) by hosting a tourist guide upskilling training.
The training is aimed at upskilling the existing practitioners in compliance with the prescripts of the Tourism Act, Act No. 3 of 2014, which regulates the Tourist Guide profession.

The training is being provided by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in partnership with Amajuba District Municipality. The training is taking place at the Newcastle Municipality Training Centre, and it is geared towards providing accreditation to Tourist Guides in culture and nature guiding.
According to the District Municipality’s Communications Unit, the training is aimed at equipping underprivileged communities trading in the tourist guide space.
“Youth with passion in tourism who were already practising within the tourism space were identified and invited to participate in the training,” explained the Communications Unit.
Deputy Mayor Cllr Lihle Mthembu expressed commitment on behalf of the Amajuba District Municipality to facilitate the smooth execution of the training in partnership with all stakeholders and role players. The Amajuba District Municipality’s initiative is commendable as it will not only benefit the community by upskilling the existing practitioners, but it will also promote the growth of the tourism sector in the region.
