The caller told police that immediate help was required, after the man was seen running towards the river.

“On arrival, police were told by witnesses that the man had jumped into the river and the current had swept him away,” explained Arumugam.

With law enforcement unable to locate the deceased, Search and Rescue was called for assistance. The Newcastle Search and Rescue team jumped into action, searching relentlessly for the man before finding his body not long afterwards.

A police source explained that the man was allegedly mentally challenged and had apparently tried to commit suicide three times before.

However, Arumugam stressed this could not be confirmed. However, she emphasised that a full investigation into the matter would be conducted.
