Tired of continuous criminal activity in the area, public unrest broke out in Osiweni on Monday, 8 August 2022, resulting in one man’s death and two hospitalised.
Osizweni SAPS spokesperson, Captain Sipho Nkosi explained that after a man was robbed of his cellphone on Sunday and a shebeen was robbed by the same group of approximately 10 people, the community stepped in.
While unable to confirm if the perpetrators were linked to the youth-based gangs, he said, “Community members from the Manzana area, Osizweni, started looking for the suspects.”
Two suspects were eventually found in Section E, Osizweni, and were severely assaulted by the angry community members. During the attack on the two men, Captain Nkosi said, “Osizweni Public Order Police and Vispol were sent out, and the community members dispersed.”
However, a scuffle broke out between the mob and police, where an officer’s firearm was snatched while trying to stop the alleged thieves from being further beaten by the enraged mob.
Fortunately, the problem was resolved, and the firearm recovered, according to the SAPS. The two injured suspects were taken to hospital.
However, the mob regrouped and continued their search for those involved in the two crimes. Another suspect was found, and he was killed at the Mndozo Farm Cemetery.
Captain Nkosi explained that while no arrests have yet been made, the situation is currently calm and police are enforcing a strong presence.
Further police investigations are currently underway.
