The Department of Home Affairs in Vryheid is now closed until further notice due to five armed men emptying out the government entity.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala explained that at 9 pm on 8 May 2022, the security guard was conducting his duties when he was suddenly accosted by five armed suspects.

After ensuring the security guard was neutralised, and unable to stop them, Gwala explained, “The suspects broke into the offices, where they took 16 CPUs, two TVs and a cash tray, and drove away in their getaway vehicle.”

While the perpetrators were able to escape, Gwala states that the matter is still under investigation.

However, due to the loss of the computers, the AbaQulusi (Vryheid) Municipality issued a notice stating that the residents would now have to visit the nearest Home Affairs offices in eMondlo and eDumbe for services until further notices.

For birth registrations and death certificates, the AbaQulusi Municipality pointed out that the Department of Home Affairs in the Vryheid Hospital was open.

It is these acts of cowardly, un-South African deeds which not only negatively impact an entire town but destroy the very nature of our country. Therefore, if you have any information on any of the five men, be a patriotic Newcastillian and contact the Vryheid police right now on  034 989 5515.
