Political violence has yet again reared its ugly head in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. This time, however, in the Alfred Duma (Ladysmith) Municipality, following the assassination of Inkosi Maxwell Mandlakayise Nxumalo.
According to KZN Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), the 71-year-old Inkosi was shot dead during the early hours of Tuesday morning, 22 March 2022.
As CoGTA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Inkosi and the communities under the Nxumalo Traditional Council, KZN CoGTA MEC Sipho Hlomuka says, “We call upon law enforcement agencies to apprehend those that are responsible for this act of cowardice.”
Following the assassination, MEC Hlomuka points out that KZN CoGTA has actively engaged with the issue of safety concerns raised by Amakhosi.
“We have been working together with law enforcement agencies and sister departments to come up with ways of dealing with concerns raised by Amakhosi. We have also noted the work being done by law enforcement agencies to apprehend those that are responsible for the attacks on Amakhosi and Izinduna.”
MEC Hlomuka moreover highlights that the institution of traditional leadership within KZN is resilient and will not be shaken by the challenges that have been thrust upon it.
