The SAPS have recovered commercial explosives in an abandoned house in Mooi River, KwaZulu-Natal.
Brigadier Vish Naidoo, police spokesperson explained the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit recovered the commercial explosives in the Bruntville area, Mooi River, during an intelligence-driven operation on Saturday morning, 18 December 2021.
According to reports, information on the abandoned house’s location was given to the SAPS, as well as intel that the explosives were allegedly going to be utilized to blow up Mooi River Toll Gate, due to the recent announcement of the Former president Mr. Zuma return to prison.
According to information, the plan was to create chaos by targeting national key points in KZN.
The information was then apparently liaised with members of the PMB K9 unit.
“These explosives have been confirmed to be Viper booster which are generally used in mining,” Brigadier Naidoo points out.
Although, not confirmed yet, it is suspected that these explosive may have been intended for Automated Teller Machine (ATM) bombings and/or Cash-in-Transit (CIT) heists. Brigadier Naidoo notes this is because similar explosives are known to have been used for this purpose before.
“These types of explosives have been recovered previously as well.”
No arrests have yet been made with regards to explosives recovered. The SAPS are appealing to anyone who has any information to please contact the SAPS on 086 00 10111.
