Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Utrecht has entered a new era. Cllr Mzwakhe Buthelezi, Mayor of eMadlangeni Municipality, is working hard to address the town’s issues.

Cllr Buthelezi visited the Utrecht Traffic Department on Wednesday, 5 January 2022. This comes after receiving numerous service delivery complaints about the Department.

Determined to get to the bottom of the problem, the Mayor met with public members to discuss the challenges they face when using the office.

The main issues stem from the Department’s long lines. A matter which frustrates the patrons. Following this, the Mayor met with the Traffic Department’s staff and management.

After which, Cllr Buthelezi was made aware of the Department’s staff shortages affecting the overall process. As a result, the new Mayor pledged to address the issue, especially when considering that the entity is a cash generator for the municipality.

Tending to the elderly, Cllr Buthelezi also visited the SAVF Huis Joanna Old Age Home.

If you can remember, the Newcastillian – Online News reported in March 2021 that the facility was in dire straits.

At the time, Huis Joanna, with a 50 person capacity, ran low on essential goods and food. The Newcastle and Utrecht community was called upon to assist at the time.

Determined to ensure the home does not find itself in a similar predicament, Mayor Buthelezi interacted with the facility’s staff and residents. The engagement offered him the opportunity to assess the old age home’s challenges.

After the visit, the Mayor made it his prerogative to assist the home, where the municipality could.

In addition, the Mayor of eMadlangeni and the Municipal EXCO made sure that they did not become complacent about the state of their town. The Mayor and the EXCO team got their hands dirty on Tuesday, 4 January and Wednesday, 5 January 2022.

The team devoted two days to cleaning up Utrecht and its surroundings by removing litter. They also concentrated on grass cutting and tree felling in the Utrecht Town Hall park and the Border Informal Traders market precinct.

The Amajuba District Municipality also assisted in the unclogging of sewer pipes that had become unsightly over time. Because Utrecht is a tourist destination, the clean-up campaign was part of the Mayor’s service delivery mandate to keep the town clean at all times.
