The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department is showing no mercy to taxis operating without driving permits. This follows the department’s seizure of numerous taxis in the province operating without valid driver’s licenses.
According to the department, more than 50 vehicles were confiscated in Greytown on Wednesday, 17 November 2021, after unlicensed operators allegedly invaded the taxi rank and threatened to take over the rank and operations.
This formed part of the Department’s Shanela Operation, which the KZN Department of Transport first implemented in 2002 to confiscate unroadworthy taxis and those without route licenses.
The department has now launched Operation Shanela, a combined operation led by the agency’s Public Transport Enforcement Service that will target areas in the province where the taxi sector is suffering volatility.
uMzimkhulu, KwaNongoma, Newcastle, Harding, Kranskop, and Mandeni are among the other areas targeted.
According to the Department, 72 vehicles have been detained for operating without permits, 46 have been suspended, and 47 charges have been issued for minor defects.
