Shandu Mbatha, the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA) chairperson, was hospitalised following a drive-by shooting that left his wife mortally wounded.
The couple was reportedly driving home from a funeral with other passengers when gunmen in a vehicle opened fire on them near Estcourt.
Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, KZN Police spokesperson, explains, on Sunday, 2 January 2022, at 11 am, a man arrived at the Winterton police station driving a vehicle containing injured people. He informed the police that while he was driving in the Nkomokazini area, in Amangwe, with his family, he was attacked by unknown people.
Colonel Mbhele adds, “He alleged that the suspects opened fire, fatally wounding his 55-year-old wife, and injuring him and two passengers.”
While Mbatha’s wife was declared dead at the police station, the injured victims were escorted to a hospital for treatment.
Moreover, the Amangwe Police Station officially opened an investigation into the murder and attempted murder charges. Colonel Mbhele, on the other hand, claims that at this time, the reason for the shooting is unknown.
