For Christians around the world, Easter is a time of reflection and worship. A time to remember the sacrifice Jesus Christ made in order to save humanity from their sins.
However, for the people of Sri Lanka, this past Easter was one of pain and turmoil. On Sunday, April 21, a series of bombs killed 290 people, while a staggering 500 people were injured.
Reports claim three churches in Negombo, Batticaloa and Colombo’s Kochchikade district were targeted during Easter services.
Another set of explosions also rocked the Shangri-La, Kingsbury and Cinnamon Grand hotels in the country’s capital.
Officials claim the atrocious attacks were carried out by suicide bombers, allegedly belonging to a local jihadist group named National Thowheed Jamath. Although, it is still to be confirmed as no one has admitted to the attacks.
Following the brutal attacks, police carried out raids on two addresses. During the raids, there were further explosions. The one explosion took place in Dehiwala, Southern Colombo, while the second explosion took place near the Colombo district of Dematagoda. Three officers lost their lives in the explosions.
With social media ablaze with the reports on the violent attacks, the world goes into mourning for the innocent lives lost in the attacks.
