Newcastle SAPS has issued a warning to the community about online scam artists, who are presently preying on residents.
Newcastle police spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam explains police are currently investigating a case of fraud where a popular social media platform was used.
According to Arumugam, the modus operandi involves the suspect placing an advert on social media, claiming he is selling a vehicle. “We urge the community not to deposit money for adverts they have seen on social networks.”
Additionally, Arumugam explains that if you see an advert on social media and are interested in the item, it is better to phone the person and ask them to meet you at the nearest police station. When it comes to things such as vehicles for sale, she adds, “Never ever deposit your hard-earned cash without seeing the car and person physically.”
