Geared up and ready to take the community’s rugby to the next level, St Dominics Newcastle is excited to announce rugby icons Frankie Horne and Phillip Snyman will be coming to Newcastle.
Looking at the credentials of the professional players; Horne is a South African rugby union player who played for the South African Sevens team from 2007 until 2016. He also played 15-man club rugby for Wellington and the Boland Cavaliers at a provincial level. Snyman is the current captain of South Africa’s National Rugby 7s Team, the Blitzbokke. He plays as a centre or winger for the Cheetahs in both Super Rugby and the Currie Cup. Additionally, these two renowned players are known for their talents off the field—as they are involved in professional rugby coaching and training programmes.
From Friday, 23 April 2021, to Saturday, 24 April 2021, the two sports stars will be at St Dominics Newcastle for the school’s Rugby Clinic. This two-day event is set to benefit both Newcastle school rugby players and their coaches. Head of Sports at St Dominics Newcastle, Raymond van Niekerk explains that for coaches, the event will focus on:
- How to plan your coaching structures for the year
- Fundamentals of defence and counterattack
- Player skills development
- How to get the most out of your sessions in the times of Covid-19.
Tried and tested by these coaches from SAS Rugby, Van Niekerk emphasises that coaches attending the clinic will also have the opportunity to engage with both these players and ask any questions they might have. Furthermore, players will get the opportunity to take part in one-on-one sessions with Horne and Snyman. Van Niekerk points out, “There will be a few breaks, where participants will be allowed to ask any questions, take photos and get autographs.”
On Saturday morning, there will be a session involving both players and coaches. “This session will be about coaching the players. Players have been away from rugby training for so long. We are very excited to have them back on the field and able to focus on player development. The players will be taken through various exercises, giving them optimal results.” Furthermore, in terms of skills development, players will learn how to get the most out of their sessions throughout the Covid-19 period.
There is no better way to start the rugby season in 2021 than with two legends of the game, be sure to book your spots now for the Frankie Horne and Philipp Snyman Rugby Clinic, as only a limited number of participants will be allowed.
