Crime in Newcastle continues to plague law-abiding citizens, with Newcastle police investigating a series of recent cases.
The first case involves a man found with suspected stolen property on 22 March 2021. The spokesperson for Newcastle SAPS, Lizzy Arumugam, explains the suspect was found with copper pipes on Hardwick Street by Magenta Security and was handed over to the police, with investigations now underway.
In a separate incident, also on 22 March 2021, a man was caught attempting to steal copper pipes from Carnegie Art Gallery.
The suspect was taken into custody after the security guard heard an unusual noise while performing his routine patrols. Upon investigating the source of the noise, he saw a man carrying copper pipes.
Surprised by the security guard’s arrival, the suspect attempted to flee from the scene, dropping the stolen pipes in the process. His escape was short-lived, as the security guard managed to apprehend him before notifying the Newcastle Police.
While copper theft is proving to be problematic, it appears unscrupulous villains are targeting vehicles and stealing their tyres. This follows two separate cases in town.
Arumugam explains the first incident took place on 26 March 2021, at approximately 9 pm, at Fuel Station Northdown Motors on the R34. According to the victim, he noticed the back tyres from his truck had been removed. A similar incident took place on 27 March 2021 at a house situated on Patterson Street, where a motorist reported two tyres were stolen from his vehicle.
