A courageous police officer from Ladysmith, Northern KwaZulu-Natal, has proven to be a formidable force in the fight against crime after taking on four armed men.
On Wednesday, 6 January 2021, an officer affiliated to the Ladysmith K9 Unit was on her way to work, to report for duty when she was stopped by victims of a business robbery on Poona Road, Ladysmith. Immediately stopping to assist them, Captain Nqobile Gwala, SAPS spokesperson states, “A description of the four suspects was given to the police officer. Using her private vehicle, she drove around until she spotted the suspects.”
Upon noticing the officer, Captain Gwala says the suspects began shooting at her. This resulted in a shootout ensuing between the suspects and the police officer.
Realising they would not overcome the determined officer, the suspects fled in separate directions. This forwarded the policewoman the opportunity to call for back up—resulting in Officers from the K9 Unit, and Ladysmith SAPS swiftly responding to the scene.
Not long afterwards, Captain Gwala states that two suspects were arrested after they were found hiding in a house. She adds, “They were found in possession of an illegal firearm with ammunition, as well as a toy gun. The money that was taken during the robbery was also recovered.” Police are still searching for the other suspects who managed to flee the scene.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula commended the policewoman for being brave when facing ruthless criminals head-on. “We will not rest until the remaining culprits are caught,” he said. While the SAPS now search for the remaining offenders, Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lizzy Arumugam, urges business owners to practice caution.
In an effort to help minimise the chances of being targeted by criminals, Arumugam offers the following safety tips:
- Do not keep too much money on business premises.
- Be on the lookout for suspicious customers.
- Do not keep the business open until late.
- Avoid being alone in the business, especially at night.
- Do not open for anyone after the business is closed.
- Install surveillance cameras if possible.
- Employ security personnel for extra safety.
- Be vigilant when working with money, and bank cash.
Well done to the fearless officer who took on the four offenders, proving the SAPS is determined to stand against crime.
