With regards to the infrastructure issues faced in the Newcastle area, the Newcastle Municipality is rolling out a new initiative focused on resurfacing local roads prior to the festive season getting underway.
On Wednesday, 18 November 2020, the Newcastle Municipality officially launched the Festive Resurfacing Programme. Kicking the project off in Madadeni, the purpose of the initiative is multifaceted.
Newcastle Mayor, Cllr Dr Nthuthoko Mahlaba, elaborates, “Part of this campaign is to make the roads safe, especially with the festive season coming up.”To ensure the roadside fatalities are minimised, the mayor points out that several roads in the CBD and townships have been identified to benefit from the campaign.
With the project in full swing, Cllr Dr Mahlaba highlighted the importance of seeing speed bumps being put in place around local schools, hospitals and clinics. This is to ensure the safety of children, as well as those in need of medical treatment.
As this piece of positive development gets underway, what motivated this initiative? According to the mayor, this forms part of the Municipality’s plans to revitalise Newcastle.
Through focusing on infrastructure and revitalising the town, Cllr Dr Mahlaba feels the town’s economy can develop and grow—thereby ensuring Newcastle’s progression.
As the local Municipality begins to greenlight such projects, what are your thoughts?
