Potholes are a blight on any road, wreaking havoc in and around town; while causing damage to motorists’ vehicles.

However, the Newcastle Municipality is currently taking steps to rectify potholes which are tarnishing local roads.

“We are in the process of resurfacing roads, sealing potholes and reconstructing a number of roads within our municipality,” says Mlungisi Khumalo, Newcastle’s Municipality’s head of communications.

Khumalo says the municipality is aware of ailing roads, which are becoming too unworthy for vehicles to use.

“We are racing against time to rectify the problems faced by motorists on our roads. Currently, the ongoing campaign of making potholes a thing of the past is in full swing. The project was reignited last year when Mayor Cllr Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba came in as mayor. His priority, which was highlighted during his budget roadshows, was to fix damaged roads.”

Currently, teams are dispatched in various parts of town; in an attempt to prevent further damage to vehicles.

“We’ve identified pothole hotpots needing urgent intervention, and units are busy fixing them,” says Khumalo.

Khumalo says the Newcastle Municipality would like to encourage community members to exercise patience during this time.

“The process may take longer to reach some parts of the municipality, due to the numerous roads needing our immediate attention. We’ve set a time frame for accomplishing this objective, and we are confident that we will reach our target.”

In the interim, Khumalo says the municipality is calling upon motorists to drive with caution.

“We also urge motorist and residents to work with us, especially as some roads might be closed due to road works or sealing of potholes,” he concludes.
