Newcastle K9 unit seizes R50 000 worth of cocaine in Ncandu Park

The war on drugs in Newcastle continues, with local police officials hot on the pursuit of drug dealers, determined to eradicate the drug industry from Newcastle’s streets.

Recently, a major drug bust was made by Newcastle K9 unit officers, Warrant Officer Dlomo, Constable Nkabinde and Constable Ngcobo.

On January 17, the three officers arrested an alleged drug dealer dealing in cocaine in Ncandu Park. During the arrest, the officers recovered cocaine valued at an approximate R50 000.

“The cocaine is still in rocks and is yet to be prepared to be sold,” says Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Captain Jabulani Ncube.

The arresting officers are commended for their efforts to curb this form of crime; which according to the Newcastle SAPS is rife in the area.

While the suspect is now police custody, preparing to face the legal consequences of his action, just how large is the illegal drug industry in South Africa?

According to the 2018 International Narcotics Control Strategy (INCS) Report, compiled by the US Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, South Africa was flagged as a leading regional importer of chemicals used in the manufacture of illicit drugs, particularly synthetic drugs.

Furthermore, it was also found that South Africa is also the largest market for illicit drugs in sub-Saharan Africa.

The report claims South American cocaine enters South Africa primarily via air to OR Tambo International Airport. A portion of the shipment is then allegedly distributed for local consumption, while the remainder is trafficked internationally, often controlled by Nigerian criminal organisations.
