On Tuesday, September 24, Newcastle Bowls Club saw a staggering 72 players forming 18 teams for the bowls club’s first-ever Cancer Bowls Day. The teams were formed by people from Newcastle, Volksrust, Vryheid and Colenso.

Cancer is a disease which can affect people from all social circles, age groups, races and religious backgrounds. Yet, there are those who make it their mission to combat the dreaded disease.

Samantha Shaw, from the Newcastle Bowls Club, explains the day was established to contribute to the community and make a positive impact on the fight against cancer.

“Out of the entrance fees to enter the day, 50% went to CANSA. The bowls club was able to donate a total of R5 000 and the Rapportryers donated a further R5 000.”

With the day focusing on a worthy cause, participants ensured they put their best forward, vying for the win.
