Teachers play instrumental roles in the lives of children, often guiding their learners to new heights on the path of education. However, there are those who have tarnished the noble profession of teaching.

A KwaZulu-Natal teacher was arrested on September 13, after he had sex with a teenage pupil and then tricked her into taking abortion pills, after discovering she was pregnant

The 51-year-old man appeared in the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court this week. His case has been remanded and he will remain in custody until September 23.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala says the teacher, who works at a high school in the Mkhindini Reserve, groomed the 13-year-old girl. Leading her to believe that they were in a relationship.

After manipulating her and forming a sexual relationship with her, the teenage girl fell pregnant. When she informed the teacher that she was experiencing pains, he said would give her pain medication for relief.

However, the teen became sick and was taken to hospital in a critical condition. It was then discovered that the suspect had given her tablets for the termination of pregnancy.

A case of attempted murder and a case of rape were then opened at Melmoth Police Station. The cases were then transferred to Eshowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, who saw the suspect taken into custody.

Police investigations are now underway, to get to the root of the matter.
